Thankfulness in Pictures

As Americans, we have so much to be thankful for.  We sometimes feel like we have it hard, but compared to people in other countries, we have it made.  I have had a great 2010 and have so much to be thankful for...so on the eve of Thanksgiving, here are some things (people) I am thankful for (and in no particular order).

my sweet mom who is always there for me and will do anything in her power to make my life better
My cousins - Lori and Jennifer (Nin), who are not only family, but great friends!

Jason and Jamie Durant - Jason has been my guy friend I go to for advice and who calls me out when I need it and I gained another great friend when he married Jamie!  So excited that they will be parents in 2011.

My best girlfriends of the past 10-13 years!  Mandy, April, Stephanie, and Brownie.
We laugh together, we cry together and we do life together.  They are not only my friends, but my sisters.

Ms. Gail and Tami - I am so thankful that I get to work with these two.
So much wisdom comes from them and I am a better person because of them in my life.

Aunt Judy and Uncle Murl - they have watched me grow up and have always been there for me
The Handley siblings!  Love my aunt and uncles and their families.

My siblings!  Gosh I cannot imagine life without them.
So lucky to have my sisters and my brother (in law).
We laugh, fight and cry together!
Love love love them!
My dad and Kay - always there, always providing, and always loving!
So thankful for another year with them!
Michael Mayfield
Excited about how the Lord has brought us together the past year and thankful that he is in my life

My best friends - Karen and Cindy
Love love these girls and the fun we have.
Great listeners, great advice givers and great accountability partners!

My precious girls - Caitlyn, Kelsey, Haley and Hannah.
I have watched them grow up into beautiful, Godly young women.
So thankful for our monthly Bible study.

My trip to South Africa
Life Changing!

My SA team - Joey, Scott L, Mike and Scott D
Loved experiencing SA with them !

My favorite SA moment - seeing this young man's life changed when he accepted Christ in his life.
A moment I will never forget.

My sweet Ella - oh how I love this one.  She is so full of life and bring smiles to my face.

My little bud Brandon, gosh I cannot believe how big is he.
So proud of him and the little guy he is growing up to be,  Can't imagine life without him.
Kim and Kasey (pictured with Tami)
Two more women I have the privilege to work with.
Love how we get to do life together on a daily basis.

These only touch the surface...there are so many moments, people and things I am thankful for.  I could go on and on...but will leave it at this.  This Thanksgiving, take time to reflect on what the Lord has done in your life - the good times and the hard times - as we are commanded to be thankful for ALL things!  Happy Thanksgiving!

2010 - Best Year Ever?

I cannot believe that 2010 is almost over.  It really did fly by!  My life has changed so much in the past year.  I like to say I have "evolved" - no I am not a meditator, karma, yoga person - but I do feel like I am a new person in a certain sense.

If I truly look back on the past few years of my life, I can say that I wasn't as happy as I let on.  My life was not miserable at all, but it wasn't as fulfilling and happy as it could have been.  I have always been an optimist, someone who sees the glass half full, who tries to see the best in people.  Yes, I totally have my flaws - I do not have a lot of mercy, think I know everything and am a control freak (and those are just a few off the top of my head - there are many, many more).  But, as I look back, I was just going through life like a zombie, it was all a routine to me.  Go to work, come home, watch tv, go visit my family, hang with friends sometimes and go to church....and repeat...over and over again.  I feel that life continued on and I stood still.  I had become complacent in my life.

You see all of my friends had gotten married, were beginning to have families of their own and I was the single one left.  Yes, they included me but I was still the odd wo-man out.  Its wonderful hearing about their life, but I couldn't relate and didn't have a lot to contribute to the conversations because my life was on repeat - nothing was new with me.  I cannot tell you how many times people asked, "what's new with you?" and all I could say was, "nothing - just work and church".  Don't get me wrong, I was not bitter about their life, envious of it sometimes - yes, I will confess that, but never bitter for their happiness.  I LOVED hearing about their lives and so thankful to be a part of their lives - I just wanted my story too.

I knew it was time for a change.  I knew it would be difficult to make that change.  It would mean giving up dreams, giving up a place where I have invested years of my life into others, and yes giving up seeing my friends and family on a weekly basis.  But, I knew that the Lord was calling me away - I just had to stop stalling and do it.  So, I put my big girl pants on and visited another church.  I am so thankful for my friend, Karen.  The Lord brought us into each others lives when we both needed it the most.  She was mourning the loss of a friendship and I needed to step out and begin to live again.

I started attending GFBC, met a lot of new people, made a lot of friendships and began living again.  Not only in my life, but in my walk with the Lord.  I have said it on here many times it is so easy to become complacent in your walk with Christ.  I have done that many many times.  Put on a face for the church and at work and act like I have it all together.  When in reality, I did not (and still fail miserably at it everyday).

I can honestly say, I am happier now than I have been in years.  Everyday is something new.  I feel like I have a new lease on life.  I am not coming home and sitting in front of the tv every night, being sucked into a world of fantasy and living through fictional or reality lives.  I am out LIVING my life - the life the Lord has called me to.  When people ask me, "what's new with you", I can give them an answer, I can talk about it for hours.  I can share about new friendships, relationships that I am building and most importantly what the Lord has done for me the past year.  People have come to me and said - "you have a glow about you".  Now, I do not know about that - but maybe I do.  I will admit I am a social butterfly now and I am loving every minute of it!  Yes, I have lost touch with some of the old relationships and that makes me sad, but maybe they were in my life for just that season and I do pray that we'll see each other more in the years ahead.  And I have strengthened some relationships as well - maybe I needed to get moving in my life for me to realize how much they meant to me.

I have no clue why I just posted this - I had started this post to be about summer 2010 and fun photos - but it turned into this deep introspect of the year 2010.  I'll post fun pics of summer 2010 next time.  Maybe I just needed to confess or maybe someone reading this feels the same way I did and needs to make a change and live again.  If that's the case - do it...it will hurt for a short time, but oh how sweet the rewards are when you are following hard after the life that Christ has set before us.

I'm Behind...

Greetings!  I am behind on my blogging since returning from Africa - I did such a great job when I was there - I am pretty proud of myself.  I got back home and alas - life happened.  I was gone again on a fun vaca with my girlfriends, came home and back to work with 2 back to back events and I leave again next weekend for staff retreat.  Never fear, I will be blogging again in October with photos from my adventures...

Esther...

Here's a few more chapters from Esther...love this study!
  • Some crises are too important for saving face.  Saving lives is worth losing face every time.  When was the last time you had to risk losing face to try to save something more precious than pride?
  • In God's economy saving is always worth losing.
  • Repentance is not your punishment.  It's your glorious right of daughter-ship.  Your invitation is to restoration.
  • As painful as the process may be, that which shatters our superficiality also shatters the fetters of our fragility and frees us to walk with dignity and might to our destinies.  We are not the fragile flowers we've considered ourselves to be.  We, like Esther, are the warrior princesses of God.
  • We tend to detach from sights and situations that make us feel badly about ourselves-especially when we feel powerless.  If we think we can't do anything about a bad situation, we'd just as soon not have to see it.  But, if we distance ourselves long enough from real needs, we replace them with those that aren't.  The more detached and self-absorbed we become, the more we mistake annoyances for agonies.
  • Sometimes we fear that fighting for what is right will kill us.  Then again, it occurs to us that to stand by and do nothing out of self-preservation is to be dead already.
  • You are royalty.  Not figurative royalty.  Not just spiritual royalty.  You are the most literal sense possible the daughter of the universe's King.  You have royal blood in a way that even Esther did not.  The crimson bloodline of Christ flows through your veins.
  • Not only are you royalty but you also have been placed in your sphere of influence, regardless of the size you perceive it to be, "for such a time as this."
  • We can refuse to walk in obedience to God or cower in fear from our calling and He will undoubtedly still accomplish His agenda.
  • We are not called to an easy life, we are called to a purposeful life!
  • Sometimes our most important moments come hand-in-hand with our willingness to reveal that we aren't really who we've seemed to be.
  • We can protect ourselves right out of our callings.
  • There is no denial in courage.  Don't confuse denial with courage.
  • You may be one brave decision away from the most important turn in your entire path!
  • We cannot have conditional faith - "I believe God will never let this happen to me" and if it does - you're done!
  • Most frequent command in the Bible is "don't be afraid."
  • God will always offer us the courage.
  • It's tough being a woman in the tight fist of fear.
  • Satan has no authority to destroy us, so he settles for the next best thing:threatening to destroy us.
  • Our natural human defense is to grovel before God and plead with Him not to let things happen.  Our conditional trust not only makes us an open target for enemy torment; it also positions us as negotiators and beggars before God instead of secure children who trust their lives to their faithful Father.
  • Those times when our fears become reality we feel devastated.  We think God is unfaithful and Satan essentially gets what he wants - us to believe that life is over.  Unless our belief system changes, for all practical earthly purposes, it is.  After all, as a man thinks, so is he (Proverbs 23:7).
  • The most critical breakthrough of faith you and I could ever experience is to let God bring us to a place where we trust him - period.  We don't just trust Him to let us avoid what we fear most.  We determine to trust Him no matter what, even if our worst nightmare befalls us.  We have no greater victory and can render Satan no harsher blow.
  • Our only steadfast defenses against life's certain uncertainty is unconditional trust in a Savior who loves us more than His own life.
  • Any time God calls us to die, His purpose is to reveal larger life.
  • One reason we desperately need to know our standing in God's eyes is so we aren't consumed with high standing in our own eyes or the eyes of others.
  • Embarrassment is our friend when we let it motivate us to change.
  • Admitting we have an area of brokenness is a huge step toward wholeness.
  • We will never fulfill our God ordained destinies as long as we're straddling the fence!
  • Never in our wait is God inactive.
  • Whenever God calls us to wait, something is up and we have to trust Him!
  • The longer the Lord waits, the harder He's working.
  • Our strength will be depleted when we wait on the thing, the person, the event - but when we wait on the Lord it will be renewed!
  • It's tough being a woman who can balance passion with patience.

More from Esther...

Let me share a little more with you from my study on Esther...
  • Sometimes God reserves the right to tell us what happened without telling us how He reacted to it.  God is so wholly secure in His own spotless integrity that He feels perfectly comfortable giving us an account of something without making Himself accountable to us.
  • Those of us who know Jesus personally live under divine rule where all us girls get to be princesses anyway.
  • Never underestimate the impact of God-driven, Scripture-quickened people skills even in the most uncomfortable human encounters.  Despite the scowled-faced disapproval of the unbearably religious, we neither have to be carnal to be likable nor insincere to be endearing.  We can love God and still be liked by people.
  • One good thing about living in an increasingly crude world is that a woman with manners, even one who simply knows how to make introductions or host gatherings can stand out like a rare gem in a barrel of coal.  God can grant her favor that a woman with a wall covered in credentials may never gain.
  • Esther managed to walk the fine line of moderation without making others feel judged because they didn't.
  • Sometimes providence can be defined as times when God trumps your perfectly good plan with one of His own...then seems to disappear from it.  Take heart!  He's right there and He's there right.
  • It's tough being a woman in a mean world!
  • God is as purposeful in what He doesn't reveal in His Word as in what He does.
  • I don't know how God perfects plans that seem so bleak to us in process, but these two things I know:  He never takes His eyes off of us or off the clock ticking over us.
  • Every hope and every victory the enemy thinks he has is maddeningly thwarted at the perfect time.  Satan can't win and you can't lose.
  • Remember what God has done for you!  Rehearse the story again.
  • Let's learn to be thankful every time we feel sorry for even our smallest offense toward someone.  God designed conviction to be uncomfortable so that we'd hurry to repentance and find relief in restoration.  Feeling is a good thing.  Nothing is more frightening than a seared conscience.
  • The same judge who sat on the bench on the day the wrong was committed will be sitting on the bench the day of sentencing.
  • It will often be a crisis that God uses to pivot our direction.
  • It's tough being a woman thrown a giant sized weight!

Esther

I have been doing Beth Moore's Esther Bible Study, It's Tough Being A Woman, for about a month now...its a great study and I highly recommend it.

I thought I would give you some things that I have underlined and that have stuck out for me from weeks one & two...
  • Esther isn't about the miracle but God working through the natural
  • Seek Him and God's Will will find me!
  • When we trust our lives to the unseen but ever present God, He will write our lives into His story and every last one of them will turn out to be a great read with a grand ending.
  • We have a sovereign God who reigns over all and is threatened by none.
  • It's tough being a woman in another woman's shadow!
  • In God - your past and future share the same root - Jesus!
  • Sometimes God reserves the right to tell us what happened without telling us how He reacted to it.  God is so wholly secure in His own spotless integrity that He feels perfectly comfortable giving us an account of something without making Himself accountable to us.
  • Those of us who know Jesus personally live under divine rule where all us girls get to be princesses anyways.
  • One good thing about living in an increasingly crude world is that a woman with manners, even one who simply knows how to make introductions or host a gathering can stand out like a rare gem in a barrel of coal.  God can grant her favor that a woman with a wall covered in credentials may never gain.
  • We can become so steeped in our culture that we are almost indistinguishable from the world.  We can lose our sense of identity and forget who we are.  Indeed, the fact that we can hide our Christianity assumes a certain amount of assimilation.  We need to recapture our identity and identification as His children-not so we can be obnoxious but so we can be influential.
  • Praise God for a King who gives a woman dignity instead of taking it, a righteous King whose commands are always for our good and whose ways are always toward our wholeness.
  • A woman who can win the man and her female peers is in a class almost by herself!
  • Esther managed to walk the fine line of moderation without making others feel judged because they didn't.
  • Our rebellious human nature makes us resistant enough to doing what we're told that over time the effort to go against the grain - to choose the excellence of Christ over the minimalism of man - will distinguish us from countless peers.
  • Only a person strong in character and steadfast in spirit can follow someone else's instructions for long.  Ironically her dependability earns her double the workplace significance of those who won't risk it.  If long-term persistence doesn't win the favor of an earthly supervisor, trust the God who sees and who is by no means limited to one channel of favor toward you.
  • Sometimes providence can be defined as times when God trumps your perfectly good plan with one of His own.
  • It's tough being a woman in a world where beauty is a treatment!

Fall TV

One of my favorite times of the year is when fall tv returns. I have checked out a few new shows, in addition to the shows I currently watch - my DVR is one busy bee.

Here is my fall tv schedule...
Sunday -
  • Brothers and Sisters (ABC) - I started watching this when it first came back. The Walker family is full of entertaining drama!
Monday -
  • Gossip Girl (CW) - Yes I do love this teen show. I started watching it last year and got a few of my friends hooked too. XOXO Gossip Girl...
  • Samantha Who? (ABC) - Loved Samantha Who? last year! Its with Christiana Applegate who has amnesia and has no clue how mean and ruthless she was. Also has a great cast - Matt from Seventh Heaven, Sookie from Gilmore Girls and Jean Smart (president's wife from 24 and Charlene from Designing Women).
  • Worst Week (CBS) - very funny show. My dilemna is - its on the same time as Samantha Who?. It basically about guy who has tons of mishaps in his life.
  • Jon and Kate + 8 (TLC) - I just discovered this show over the summer. While I do not agree with their parenting skills or the way Kate talks to her husband - it is interesting to see a family of 10 live out their lives in front of a camera.

Tuesday -

  • 90210 (CW) - I watched the original and had to try out the new one. Its not as great as the original, but its nice to see some of the original 90210 people (Kelly, Brenda, Nat) on there (FYI - Kelly and Dylan have a son together).
  • Priviledged (CW) - This is a new show is with the girl from Reba (Cheyenne). Its another teen show set in West Palm Beach. She is a tutor to two spoiled sisters. So far, its ok.
  • Law and Order SVU (NBC) - I have watched this show for years...while most story lines are sad - its a good drama.

Wednesday -

  • Private Practice (ABC) - a spin off from Grey's Anatomy - I am a fan. Its a lot like Grey's with the crazy medical storylines...
  • Gary Unmarried (CBS) - this show is ok so far. Its about a newly divorced guy trying to make a life from himself. I do not know if I will continue to watch it...but I am trying it out.
  • Lipstick Jungle (NBC) - I watched this show last season. It has a great cast - Brooke Shields, the girl from 24 and the girl from Beverly Hills 90210. Follows 3 business women in NYC.
  • Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) - I watched this last season. This show is about the Darling family (i.e. the Hilton family). Rich and spoiled. Totally far fetched...but entertaining.

Thursday -

  • Survivor (CBS) - I haven't always watched Survivor, but have for the past few years. I have been a part of weekly Survivor parties (which were always fun) and just watched it from home. Its a reality show...what else can you say?
  • Grey's Anatomy (ABC) - I have watched this from the beginning. Still love the drama of Meredith, McDreamy and the gang.

Friday -

  • Ex-List (CBS) - I had seen tons of commercials about this - a girl who dates her exes to find her soul mate because a psychic told her she would marry an ex. Its not bad. I do think that Bella says dude, cool and man too much and she sounds stupid saying it - but overall not a bad show.
Saturday -
  • I do not have any shows because it takes me all week to watch what I have already DVRed.

Looking over this list - I realized I watch too much tv - looks like 13 hours in one week. Wow. Needless to say - my DVR is full and I need to take a full day to watch these shows and clean off my DVR.

So, what are you watching this fall? Any shows I need to check out?

9.25.2008

3 months...

Well its September 25 - three months from now is Christmas - can you believe it?!?! It makes me so happy - I love, love, love Christmas!!! I made my first Christmas present purchases yesterday - its never too early to begin. And I am seeing Christmas decor in more and more stores - which is a tad early in my opinion. I cannot wait to pull out my Christmas stuff and put my tree up, turn on the Christmas music - oh it truly is the most wonderful time of the year - it makes me happy!!

3 months and counting!! Merry Christmas!! ;)

Mouse Hunt Night #2

Well, another day has come and gone and still no new signs of Jerry of the mouse. I went home yesterday with a new mindset - if he has been caught - great - if not - my thinking was - lets act like he is gone. I did fairly well with that new mindset. I didn't mute my tv as often when I heard noises and I turned down staying at the Durant house (thanks Jason and Jamie for the invite) because I was determined to beat my fear. And the best part of it was I got a full night's sleep. Either the new way of thinking worked or I was so tired from the night before my body couldn't take anymore. Regardless, I slept well!

I woke up this morning and still no signs. My exterminator comes tomorrow to see what he can do and I think I will stay at my house tonight - lets see if I can make it two nights in a row of sleep! I have traps set up all through the house - so either he is great at avoiding them or he has left my house for greener pastures!

9.23.2008

Mouse Hunt Night #1

So, I put out my glue pads last night to catch my friend Jerry the Mouse. I tried to keep my mind off of it by catching up on my DVR recordings and watching some new shows - but of course, every little creek I heard, I muted it and listened. I went to bed around 10:30 saying, I was going to sleep, I was not going to worry about a little mouse. I left my tv on in my room last night (for some reason I think - maybe that will keep it out of my room), turned my fan on (so I would not hear every creek in the house and freak me out). I dozed, then I would wake up. I looked as the clock ticked away minute after minute, hour after hour. I thought about going to my car to sleep (yes I thought about it), I thought about going to a hotel and I mapped out my plan of how long I am going to sleep at my house this week (I am going to try it tonight and see how it goes - if it doesn't go well - I am either going to Jasper, to the Durant's or to the Lenning's - this is your warning people - get my room ready - I might be coming for a visit). I also mapped out my plan of, if I catch the mouse in my drawer - how I am going to get it out of there. Its one thing for it to be in a cabinet near the floor - I can just get my broom and sweep it up - its another for a drawer - I have to figure out how to get it out of drawer (thanks to Amanda Moon for the dust pan suggestion). Finally around 1:45 AM I watched a little tv, which made me sleepy and calmed my mind and I finally fell asleep a little after 2 AM. I hate that I can't sleep and I let that little thing consume me - but I HATE HATE mice. Everyone has fears and that is one of mine. Just as Brooke W. told me today - "mice are Satan with tails"!

When that alarm went off this morning, boy was it tough to get up. I did my normal routine. I looked in my closet where I had glue pad #1 - nothing (which I knew since I didn't hear the mouse screaming cause it was stuck). Went to the kitchen to turn on my coffee pot (because goodness knows I need a lot of caffeine after only getting 3.5 hours sleep) and checked my other two - nothing - again not surprised.

So, I can only hope and pray that when I get home today I will have a surprise waiting on me - a dead mouse. Or I pray he is gone where he came from -back outside.

A Mouse In The House!

UGGGG! I have a mouse somewhere in my house...I HATE, HATE, HATE them! I opened my silverware drawer this morning and found the lovely traces of rat poop everywhere! It had gotten into my little packets of ketchup and all in the silverware. All the way to work I was thinking - I need a cat!!

Lets go back to November, 2005, week before Thanksgiving, I was laying on my couch enjoying my Christmas tree and I see a mouse run across my floor. I set out traps everywhere, called the exterminator and moved out of my house for a week. I couldn't sleep since they were stationed under my bed. Literally thought I was having a nervous breakdown (sounds dramatic I know - but it was horrible)! I caught 6 on the glue traps. Disgusting! Since then I have had a deep fear of mice. Sounds make me look around, I rarely sit in the dark watching tv (since that was when I saw them the first time) - I despise them.

So, needless to say when I saw them this morning - I was sick! I have searched my house and only found traces in that one cabinet. Hopefully it has left where it came in. I have set new glue traps in that cabinet, washed all of my silverware and am looking around at every sound and sitting on my couch with the lights on! :)

Ever had mice before? Any suggestions I do not know about? I need help!

No Water...

I woke up this morning, did my normal routine, and went to turn the shower on...water, then no water...WHAT? No water? What is going on? I went to my sink...no water. I flushed my toilet...flushed, but then didn't fill up. GREAT! No water in the house. Called the big ole Hayden Town Hall, we haven't heard of any problems. I went to the neighbors house - no water either. My mind immediately goes into overdrive. I didn't see any pipe burst evidence in my house, I paid my bill, then what is it?? Call Hayden Town Hall again - its a leak somewhere in my neighborhood...and we do not know when your water will be back on...great!
So, as I sit here - still not at work mind you- here is a list to remind you how wonderful having water is.
  • You can flush the toilet - lets face it - when you cannot - blah!
  • You can take a shower - as I type this - I a) feel nasty, b) smell, c) look gross
  • You can brush your teeth - need I say more?
  • You can drink water - everyone needs their 8 glasses a day
  • You can cook with water, make coffee, etc.
  • You can make ice - hot diet coke - gross!
  • You can water your grass - if you are in a drought
  • You can wash your car - which I never do
  • You can wash your laundry - which thankfully I did last night
